Our
constituents and clientele cut across a broad range of personal, social
and economic backgrounds. Due to the hard work and commitment of a
dedicated volunteer Board of Directors, we have the fundamental structure
in place upon which to address the social-economic discrepancies faced
by urban Aboriginal People in Saskatoon. |

Who
are the Métis people? When the question is asked in the context
of social development planning, the answer is far from simple. Métis
people are recognized as one of the three Aboriginal peoples of Canada
as outlined in Section 35-(2) of the Constitutional Act, 1982. However,
to this day neither the Federal nor Provincial governments will take
fiduciary responsibility for the Métis people in Canada. This
simple fact has had a continual ripple effect on our people. With
the increasing population of Aboriginal people it has become inevitable
to both governments that a strategy must be initiated to address the
widening gaps between the mainstream society and the Aboriginal people,
especially the Métis. Many consultations and reports have been
developed, summarized and strategized that effects the Aboriginal
population. We applaud the hard work and dedication shown by those
who want to help decrease the social-economic gap of urban Métis
and First Nations people. Unfortunately, we see little in positive
development in the social and economic challenges faced by our people. |

CUMFI
firmly believes that only through Métis owned and operated
programs and services will we, as the larger community begins to see
positive change. We do not wish to work in isolation of the larger
society, only to take a leadership role in assisting our people to
make healthy transitions. To achieve this, CUMFI developed many programs
and services as well as partnerships: CUMFI is not a core funded organization,
and has made these advancements mainly through a volunteer basis.
Although CUMFI has become a leader in Métis program and service
delivery in Saskatoon, our financial limitations allow only a certain
level of achievement. To better serve our members and the larger community,
CUMFI has developed a strategic plan. |

CUMFI
will continue to develop collaborative partnerships with various agencies
and support groups to avoid duplication of programs and services delivery.
